Most young children are fine with sporting a mouth full of metal braces. In fact, it often makes them quite happy. But for older children—such as teenagers—and adults? The metal look isn’t always so cool. The good news is that there is an alternative: Invisalign.
Using the Invisalign system rather than traditional braces offers several benefits to the patient. These include:
- Being able to keep treatment a secret if needed
- Having an easier time brushing your teeth
- Being able to floss without special tools
- Never needing to worry about appearance at a special occasion
- Continuing to eat and drink what you life
- Being able to fee comfortable and being free of mouth irritation
- Reduction in tooth grinding and jaw clenching
How the System Works
Invisalign may seem radically different from traditional braces, but they work in the same manner: by placing force on the teeth to get them to move. The entire treatment plan is based on a scan of the dental anatomy, and each set of aligners is one step in the process. The aligner sets are worn for two weeks, then swapped out. Aligners must be worn for 22 hours each day to achieve the correct results.
Special Options for Teens
The original Invisalign system was developed for adults, but there is a modified system for younger patients called Invisalign Teen. The aligners are designed to accommodate continued jaw growth and tooth eruption. Each aligner has a wear indicator dot to help the patient keep track of when it is time to change the aligners. Additionally, it comes with free replacement aligners should a few be lost.
